It is with a heavy heart to inform you that Jerry Kutil, our Director of Operations, passed away on Dec. 30, 2015. I want to ensure you that we are picking up where Jerry left off and are continuing Sturgis Dragway for the 2016 season.
The 76th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is getting closer than we think and in an effort to make sure everyone has adequate notice of the dates for the Drag Races we are sending out this little news letter in an effort to let everyone know what we are planning for this year. As many of you know, this will be the 11th anniversary of Black Hills Drag Racing Association (BHDRA) operating Sturgis Dragway. As such, BHDRA has joined forces with Bill McGrew in an effort to make the 76th Sturgis Rally Drag Races the best they can be.
First and Foremost, we want to sincerely thank each and every one of you for you past participation and support of the Rally Drag Races and to personally invite each and every one of you to participate in the 2016 Races because without your participation this event would not be possible!
We have discussed the race schedule with many of you and it seems that the general consensus is to hold the races on the first weekend of the Rally so that anyone that needs or wants to head back home can do so. Additionally we have observed that the previous midweek schedule has directly conflicted with ½ mile races, short track races, hill climbs, Hulett Day and numerous organized rides such as Biker Bells, Legends Ride, etc., not to mention all of the big name concerts, resulting in extremely poor spectator attendance.
It is for the previous reasons that we are proposing the following schedule for the 2017 Rally Drag Races.
Saturday, August 5th – Move In and Test & Tune 1PM - 4PM
"Run What Ya Brung" 5PM - 10PM
Sunday, August 6th – Qualifying 1PM - 5PM
Gamblers Races 6PM - 8PM
Monday, August 7th – Eliminations and Finals 1PM - 6PM
"King of Sturgis Drags" Prior to Top Fuel Finals
Tuesday, August 8th - Drag Racing School 9AM - Noon
Afternoon held open for Rain Make Up Day
Wednesday, August 9th - The Baker "All-in to go All-out" 6PM - 11:30 PM
Thursday, August 10th - S&S Cycle Demo Rides - 8 AM - 12 PM
In addition, we will be hosting some special events later in the week so anyone who participates in the Drag Races together with their pit crew will be allowed to continue to camp in the pits for the entire week and will only be charged a nominal fee to cover the cost of cleaning of the Porta-Pots, Garbage Service, Showers, etc..
We truly do want to make the 2016 event the best it has ever been and to that end we really do need your help. We are currently trying to secure sponsors to cover all of the payouts for the various classes so that every participant knows in advance exactly what they are racing for so we are asking that you help us accomplish this goal by talking to your sponsors/business associates or giving us suggestions of who we may contact.
We would also ask that if you are directly associated with a business, you seriously consider becoming a sponsor of this event yourself. BHDRA is a South Dakota non-profit corporation therefore any advertising or sponsorship should be deductible for income tax purposes.
Should you have additional suggestions or comments that you feel will help to make this a better event, please do not hesitate to drop me an email at email@example.com because I can assure you that any and all comments or suggestions will be given serious consideration. (I cannot assure you that they will all be adopted but they will be given serious consideration.)
I am sure that many, if not all, of you know Bill McGrew who has been directly involved with Motorcycle Drag Racing most of his life and as such, knows exactly what it takes to put together a fantastic event, so be assured that between Bill, BHDRA and You, every effort will be made to make this event one of the most exciting and enjoyable events you have ever attended. If you have Race Related questions do not hesitate to call Bill at 336-409-9097 weekdays between 7am and 7pm eastern standard time.
Our web site is www.sturgisdrags.com so stay tuned for upcoming announcements as well as news releases in various magazines.
Please contact me if you have had any contact with Jerry in the last few months. I just want to make sure we are up to date with any concerns or questions.
